American Railroad and Mining Mogul. He was heir to a railroad fortune in Ohio, which he inherited from his father Hugh. He then made another fortune as founder and president of the London Mines Company of Colorado, one of the largest gold mines in the country. Over some 70 years, before being closed during World War II when Washington gave priority to minerals with military uses, the mine produced almost one million ounces of gold. In 1913 he commissioned architects Sylvanus Marston and Garrett Van Pelt to build an opulent home on nine acres in Pasadena, California. The house, dubbed Arden Villa, would become familiar during the 1980s as the Carrington estate on the hit television series 'Dynasty'.
