OBITUARY.

The eighty-eight years of Joshua Mills Clevenger's life were full of wonderful activity and energy and strict integrity and is worthy of consideration and emulation in many ways. It is an example of a man who commenced life in the sturdy labors on a pioneer farm, and outside of the marts of his trade or corporations and unsavory speculations, accumulated a fortune of over one-half million dollars.

Mr. Clevenger was born in New Jersey in 1816. In manhood's morning he married Edith Loouison (sic) and from this union were born eight sons and three daughters. About 1870 he moved West and stopped for a time in Illinois and thence came to Kansas, locating at Everest, where he remained until 1884, when he moved to York, Neb. From there he moved to Beloit, Kan., then to Missouri, then in the last year returned to Kansas. The wife of his youth died in Horton, Kan., in 1895, and three sons and three daughters awaited him on the other shore. He kept up his active life and strict attention to business to within a few weeks of his death, disposing of most of his property to his children. He was strong and vigorous in mind and body until his last sickness. On November 20th, at 3:30 a.m., he passed away from a quiet sleep at the residence of his son, No. 620 Louisiana St., Lawrence. His five sons and daughter-in-law Mrs. P. J. Clevenger, whose home he occupied during his last sickness and death were in constant attendance. The true devotion of these children was very touching and beautiful. His five sons and one grandson, Raymond Clevenger, served as pallbearers and the five sons accompanied the body to Champaign, Ill., where it was interred. The five sons are P. J. and G. G. Clevenger, of Lawrence; Chas. H., of Polo, Mo.; H. E., of Tina, Mo., and H. I. Clevenger, of Champaign, Ill. They all inherited the sterling qualities of their father.

Speaking of Mr. Clevenger, the Galltin, North Missourian, says: "Grandfather J. M. Clevenger died at the home of his son, P. J. Clevenger (sic), 620 Louisiana avenue, Lawrence, Kan., on Friday, November 20, 1903, aged 87 years, 4 months and 7 days. His remains were shipped to Champaign, Ill. for burial.

Grandfather Clevenger was a venerable, grand character. He was of a retiring disposition, yet a man of marked business sagacity, and in the long years that were given to him, rounded out a life of great success and usefulness. He had spent a part of his time during the last few years in Gallatin and will be very kindly remembered here by all who made his acquaintance." S.J.C.
