Shirley M. Kennedy, age 81 of Durand, passed away on Wednesday, June 6, 2012 at the Shiawassee County Medical Care Facility in Corunna following an extended illness. Shirley Mae Dowell was born in Durand on May 19, 1931, the daughter of John and Lula (Onyon) Dowell. She attended Durand schools, graduating from Durand High School in 1949. On September 6, 1949, she married Richard T. Kennedy who preceded her in death on December 24, 1986. Shirley enjoyed her home, friends and family. When her children were in school she volunteered as a room mother, scout leader and worked on many post proms. She loved garage sales, antiquing and refinishing furniture, dolls and doll making and many crafts. Shirley also spent many years working at area manufacturing companies where she made some wonderful friends. In her later years she attended the Bancroft Congregational Church. Survivors include children: Linda (Mark) Rodgers, Mike Kennedy, Colleen (Jim) LaJoye, Nicki (Randy) Austin; 5 grandchildren and 1 great granddaughter; 4 step granddaughters; 8 step great grandchildren and 2 step great great grandchildren; brother, Fred Dowell; sisters; Janice Hoshal, Peaches (Bob) Middleton, several nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, a brother, a nephew and several in-laws. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 23, 2012 at Watkins Brothers Funeral Homes, Durand Chapel. Pastor Mike McDonald will be officiating with final interment in Greenwood Cemetery, Vernon. The family will receive friends at the funeral home 1 hour prior to the service on Saturday. Memorial contributions are suggested to Pleasant View's Activity Department or the Bancroft Congregational Church Food Pantry.
