S-Sgt. Alvia Lee Pollard, only son of Mr. and Mrs. John T. Pollard of Pollard, was killed in North Africa area on July 12, 1943.

He was a graduate of Haworth High School in 1934.

He has served in the army three years prior to the war and one year with the National Guard at Ft. Sill.

He married the former Miss Berlene O'Rear in 1941. They have one child, Alvia Dale.

JAKE YOUNG SEES ALVIA POLLARD DIE

Sgt. Jake Young, Idabel, was only 10 steps ahead of Sgt. Alvia Pollard, Pollard when Pollard was instantly killed by a shrapnel burst, he revealed in a v-mail letter this week.

A piece of the shrapnel ripped a hole in his shirt, but he was uninjured, he said.

A.L. POLLARD BEING RETURNED FOR BURIAL

S-Sgt. Alvia L. Pollard, who was killed in action in North Africa July 12, 1943 is being returned to the states for reburial his parents, Mr. and Mrs. John T. Pollard have been notified by the war department.

Funeral services will be held under direction of Coffey funeral home but the date of arrival here is not now known.

Sgt. Pollard was born December 18, 1915, at Pollard. He graduated from Haworth High School with the class of '34. He spent a three-year enlistment at Fort Warren, Wyo., and later a year with the National Guard at Fort Sill.

He was called back into active service soon after the declaration of war and was with the 45th division at Camp Barkeley, Tex., Fort Devens, Mass., Camp Pike, N.Y., and Camp Pickett, Va., before leaving for foreign service in June, 1943.

He married the former Miss Berlene O'Rear in 1941. He is survived by his widow; one son, Alvia "Dale" Pollard; his parents, John T. and Julia (Wilmoth) Pollard; four sisters, Mrs. Carlton (Vera) Frey of Pollard, Mrs. Autrey (Faye) Dunn, McAlester, and Mrs. Lloyd (Margaret) O'Rear and Mrs. O.S. (Deta) Minter, both of Idabel.

Sgt. Pollard had been affiliated with the Baptist Church in Pollard for several years.

SIX McCURTAIN COUNTY WAR DEAD BEING SENT BACK FOR REBURIAL

The bodies of six McCurtain county World War II dead are being returned to the United States for reburial.

Aboard the Oglethorpe Victory from Europe are Pfc J. A. Battiest, whose next of kin is listed as Milwessie Battiest, Bethel; and Sgt. Robbie Knox, whose next of kin is listed as Fletcher Knox of Eagletown.

Aboard the transport Carroll Victory from Italy are Sgt. Charlie Casey, whose next of kin is A. Casey of Haworth, and Staff Sgt. Oscar Cason, whose next of kin is Mrs. C. J. Holloway of Haworth.

Mrs. Pearl Crye of Hugo has been notified that the body of Lt. Col. Howard C. Crye, a former resident of Idabel, has been returned from Italy. Mr. and Mrs. John Pollard, Haworth, have been notified that the body of their son, Alvia Pollard is being returned for burial.

REBURIAL RITES ARE SET FOR SGT. POLLARD

Reburial services for S-Sgt Alvia L. Pollard, Pollard, who was killed in action in North Africa on July 12, 1943, will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday (July 31, 1948) at the Pollard Baptist Church. Bro. Loys Vess, Denton, Tex., will officiate.

Burial will be in Denison Cemetery under the direction of Coffey funeral home.
