John B. Allison's parents, Alexander & Jemima Crawford Allison, settled in Boone County about six miles north of Columbia on the Boone's Lick Road in 1815.
John's mother died when John was eight years old. John apprenticed out to a tanner and followed that trade until he was 21. He was an avid reader and at age 22 was teaching school in Florida Monroe County Missouri.
In 1866 he was the Republican nominee for the State Legislature.
