Friedrich III (1831-1888) - Find a Grave Memorial

Prussian Monarch. Prussian King and German Emperor. He married Victoria of England, daughter of Queen Victoria, on June 1, 1858. The marriage was happy and the couple had 8 children. Two of them, Waldemar and Sigismund, did not survive their childhood. He commanded the Prussian army in the wars of 1866 and 1870/71. He was diagnosed with cancer of the larynx in May 1887. The british doctor Mackenzie doubted the diagnosis and spoke against the surgery that german doctors had recommended. This discussion over the right treatment soon became a matter between Great Britain and Prussia. Meanwhile he went to San Remo, where the weather was better for his health. In November Doctor Mackenzie diagnosed cancer and gave him only 6 months to live. When he succeeded his father it was clear that he wouldn't reign for long, because he wasn't able to breathe by himself. He only ruled the country for 99 days. He was succeeded by his son Wilhelm II, who was the last reigning German Monarch.
