H.O. Weeks, Aiken's Mayor For 40 Years
H. Odell Weeks, former mayor of Aiken, died Monday, Dec. 14, 1992, at Aiken Regional Medical Centers.
Mayor Weeks resided at 824 South Boundary. The funeral will be held at 11 a.m Wednesday at First Baptist Church, with the Rev. Dr. James M. King officiating. Burial will be in Bethany Cemetery.
A lifelong resident of Aiken, Mayor Weeks was a son of the late Oscar and Janie Wright Weeks. He served 40 years as mayor of Aiken, retiring from office in August 1991. He had previously served as a city councilman for the. city of Aiken. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Aiken. He was a 1926 graduate of the Aiken Institute and attended Clemson University. He was vice president of Lyon-Croft-Weeks and Hunter Realty.
He was a past member of the board of directors and president of the S.C. Municipal Association. He was a member of the Lower Savannah Regional Planning Council board of directors since 1971. He was named Greater Aiken Chamber of Commerce Man of the Year in 1978, and received the Aiken Toastmasters Communicator of the Year Award.
He also received the Aiken Sertoma Club Service to Mankind Award. He was a member of the Board of Visitors, Clemson University. He was the Clemson IPTAY representative of Aiken County for 46 years and former IPTAY chairman. He was a charter member and a past president of the aiken Lions Club. He was a member of Woodmen of the World and Elks. He was a Mason and a Shriner.
Mayor Weeks was a member of the Aiken Business Men's Club and the Senior Men's Club. He was an honorary member of the Aiken Rotary Club.
Survivors include two sons, Harry O. Weeks Jr., Aiken, and Thomas W. Weeks, Barnwell; a daughter, James Weeks Anderson, Lexington; and six grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Edward D. George Jr., Clifton E. Holley, William Holley, Edgar R. Brown, Tommy Coward, and Carroll Busbee.
Honorary pallbearers will be Sen. J. Strom Thurmond, Rep. Butler Derrrick, Judge Charles E. Simons Jr., Dr. H.A. Langston, Lewis Brown, E. Hines Hamilton, Dr. Wallace McNair, James D. McNair, Robert E. Johnson, G.L. Took III, Pete Brooker, Sen. Tommy Moore, Chancellor Robert Alexander, June Murff, Barbara Hamilton, Sara Ridout, Carrol Warner, the Business Men's Club of Aiken, former and current council members of the city of Aiken and the city of Aiken Public Safety Honor Guard.
