He married Amanda Martilla Howell Urmson in York, Nebraska, on 18 February 1885. They had 5 children:
Agnes Gertrude Urmson Smith (1880-1920),
Mildred Howell Urmson Brooks (1885-1979),
Roy Vincent Urmson (1887-1933),
Myrtle Constance Urmson Gannon (1890-1987),
Gail Urmson (1899-prior to 1910).
John, Amanda, and their 4 younger children are found on the 1900 US Census to be living in Colton, San Bernardino County, California. (Their oldest child, Agnes Gertrude Urmson Smith, married in 1899, and did not move to California with the family.) Amanda died in 1904. According to the California US Death Index (1905-1939), James died on 2 December 1917, in Los Angeles, California. That document does not indicate where he is buried. It's a fair assumption that John is buried in San Bernardino County or Los Angeles County, California, but no records have been found.
