Professional Football Player, Professional Basketball Player. A native of Sublette, Kansas, he played at the defensive back (safety) and offensive end positions for four seasons (1948 to 1951) in the All-America Football Conference and National Football League, with the New York Yankees and New York Giants. He appeared in 50 AAFC and NFL games, while being selected to two NFL All Pro Teams (1950 to 1951), two Pro Bowls (1950 to 1951) and was league leader in interceptions with 11 during the 1951 season. A versatile athlete, he excelled at both football (achieving All-American status) and basketball during his collegiate years at the University of Kansas. He played at the forward position for one season (1948-1949) in the National Basketball Association with the Providence Steamrollers and St. Louis Bombers, appearing in 43 games. Schnellbacher was inducted into the Kansas Sports Hall of Fame in 1972. He died of cancer.
