Willard Greene Abney, 80, of Holly Hill, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, June 23, 2010 at home. A memorial service will be held on July 3, 2010 at the American Legion Post 120 in Holly Hill beginning at 2:00pm. Willard was born in Belle Point, Kentucky on September 19, 1929. He served in the United States Navy for 26 years in World War II, Korean War, and Vietnam Era. He was a highly decorated Master Chief. He served aboard eleven ships with the most recognizable the USS KIDD DD-661 from February 1954 to 1957. After retiring from the military he was employed by and retired from the Daytona Beach News Journal. He was a member of the American Legion Post 120. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends. Willard is survived by his loving wife, Jo Abney; his brother, Melvin Abney of Spencer, Indiana; his children, Donna (Michael) Merrick and Willard G. Abney JR., both of the Seatle, Washington area. Stepchildren are Susan (Al) Gwizdale of California and Lori Ann Laffoon of Elkhart, Indiana. He is survived by nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; a host of nieces and nephews; and many friends. He is preceeded in death by his parents and seven siblings. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Daytona Beach Hospice Organization at 149 South Ridgewood Ave., Daytona Beach, FL.
