Civil War Confederate Army Officer. A Leader of the United Confederate Veterans, he entered the 20th Regiment Virginia Infantry as a Second Lieutenant in 1861 and served in nearly every campaign of the Army of Northern Virginia. He was seriously wounded at Fredericksburg in 1862 and was a Major when the Army surrendered at Appomattox Court House in 1865. Following the war, he became one of the best known veterans' organization leaders in the United States, becoming Major General and Commander of the Virginia division of the United Confederate Veterans. Serving until 1899, he attended every reunion of Confederate veterans and was instrumental in saving Confederate memorabilia for the Museum of the Confederacy and raising funds for the Jefferson Davis Memorial in Richmond.
