United States Army Soldier. During World War II, he was stationed in Europe when he was ill and had to be hospitalized. The hospital received a visit from General George Patton a few days later and when talking to Charles Kuhl, Patton took his black glove and slapped Kuhl across the face because he believed Kuhl to be a coward. Since Kuhl had NOT been wounded and did not display visible signs of being wounded, Patton simply surmised that he was a coward. However, Kuhl was later found to be suffering from malaria, unbeknownst to Patton. Patton then sent him back into the line of duty despite the doctor's orders. Kuhl had a severe case of battle fatigue which was worsened greatly by the malaria. He began running directly into the hands of the enemy where he had to be rescued. The slap gained nationwide attention at the time.
