OXNARD : Former Police Chief William Clark Dies

William Pettit Clark, former Oxnard chief of police and Ventura County undersheriff, died at an Ojai convalescent hospital on Wednesday at age 83.

A Ventura County Fairgrounds pavilion was named after Clark in recognition of his service to the Ventura County Fair, including his initiation of a junior livestock auction. Clark was president of the Clark Land and Cattle Co. and an agricultural adviser to Ventura College.

He is survived by three sisters, Margaret Rose of Santa Paula, Elizabeth Ann Brand of Lake Tahoe and Clare Whitley of Phoenix, Ore.

Clark and his wife, Bernice Gregory Clark of Ojai, had three children, Margaret Ann Krebs, Cynthia Suzanne Heffner and William Patrick Clark, who served as secretary of the the Interior and deputy secretary of state from 1980-85.

Clark had 16 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Mission San Buenaventura. Clark will be buried at Ivy Lawn Memorial Park in Ventura.
