Zelma L. Hinrichs, the daughter of Curtis Ray and Laura "Ethel" (Andres) Wallace, was born in rural Jewell County, Kan., on June 13, 1919 and passed away in Aurora, Neb., on Sept. 22, 2011.
Zelma grew up in the Bladen/Blue Hill area and graduated from Blue Hill High School in 1937. She taught rural school for two years and was working at the Showboat Diner and Gas Station at the edge of Hastings where she met the love of her life, Edward Hinrichs. They were united in marriage on June 6, 1943, at 1st Baptist Church in Hastings. To that union were born six children. They farmed east of Hastings until 1949, when they moved to a farm southeast of Giltner where they resided for 50 years. In September of 2000, they moved to a duplex at Good Samaritan Village in Hastings. Her husband of 58 years passed away on June 26, 2001. Zelma moved to the Villa at GSV in 2002, to College View Assisted Living in 2006, and to Memorial Community Care in Aurora in 2011. She was a member of the Messiah Lutheran Church in Aurora.
Zelma was her husband's partner on the farm, doing anything she could to help with the farming, while also keeping up the house and raising six children. She loved to cook and bake, gardening and canning, and liked doing needlework. She spent three summers at the Henry Fonda House at the Stuhr Museum in Grand Island, dressed in pioneer dress that she made herself, as a hostess, answering visitor's questions. She was a member her Church's women's group, Extension Club, and card club. She and Edward loved to go dancing, play cards, and especially loved the numerous bus tours they went on and the people they met on them.
Zelma was preceded in death by her husband, Ed, sons, Wayne and Stanley, son-in-law, Richard Crawford, her father, Curtis Wallace, her mother, Ethel (Wallace) Schmidt, her stepfather, Carl Schmidt, brothers, Vernon and Harold Wallace, sister and spouse, Evelyn and Linden Bock, brother-in-law, Clarence Muhleisen, and brothers and sisters-in-law, Tex and Alice Gordon, Richard and Hilda Burke, Chuck and Irma Hunt, Gail Wright and Paul Hinrichs.
Zelma is survived by: daughters and spouses, Kae and Royal Miller of Hastings, Mary and Jack Crawford and Marjorie Crawford, all of Phillips; son and spouse, Jim and Barbara Hinrichs of Hastings; daughter-in-law, Patricia Hinrichs of Colorado Springs, Colo.; 14 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and eight step-grandchildren; sister, Irene Muhliesen; brothers and sisters-in-law, Pete and Jeri Petersen, Bob and Lorraine Quirk, Nellie Wright and Donna Hinrichs.
Interment was in the Giltner Cemetery, Giltner, NE.
