From the book, South Carolina Portraits, A Collection of Portraits of South Carolinians and Portraits in South Carolina, compiled by The National Society of the Colonial Dames of America in the State of South Carolina, edited by Christie Zimmerman Fant, Margaret Belser Hollis and Virginia Gurley Meynard, page 96: Henry Thompson Earle was born on February 1, 1824, son of Dr. Robinson Messina and Elizabeth Williams (Thompson) Earle. An attorney in Columbia, he married Caroline Leaphart (1833-1915), daughter of Michael and Susan Leaphart of Lexington County. They were the parents of eight children. Henry Earle was brigadier general, 65th Regiment, 21st Brigade of the Alabama Militia in the Confederate Army. He died on November 6, 1888, and is buried in Elmwood Cemetery, Columbia.
