Cryptographer, Author. He is known as the father of cryptology in America, and was the author of spy thrillers. He started as a telegraph operator and became the foremost coding expert in the United States during World War I when he was commissioned and given the job of setting up the outfit which tapped and decoded German messages. After the war, he was selected to head the "Black Chamber", the ultra-secret permanent deciphering bureau instituted jointly by the War and State Departments. Some of his novels are 'The Red Sun of Nippon,' 'The Blonde Countess,' which was made into a movie starring Rosalind Russell and William Powell, and 'Crowds Are Black Everywhere.' He received the Distinguished Service Medal for his achievement in breaking the Japanese code.
