United States Army General. His career spanned forty-two years, 1940 to 1982, and he was a veteran of World War Two, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. On June 6, 1944, D-Day, he led an artillery unit ashore Utah Beach. A gifted linguist, he taught French, Italian, German, Spanish, and Russian at the US Ary's Language School from 1959 to 1962 and became the first Director of the Defense Language Institute in Washington, DC. As a military historian, his publications include "War in Peacetime: The History and Lessons of Korea" (1969), "The Development and Training of the South Vietnamese Army, 1950-1972" (1975), "Allied Participation in Vietnam" (1975), "The History of World War II" (1979), "War in Peace: The Marshall Cavendish Illustrated Encyclopedia of Postwar Conflict" (co-editor, 1985), "Israeli Paras" (1986), and "A Guide to the Study and Use of Military History" (2000). He directed the Army's military history program for twelve years, concluding upon his retirement in 1982 with the rank of Brigadier General. A combat veteran as well as a military historian, his many decorations include the Army Distinguished Service Medal, Silver Star, Bronze Star Medal, and the Purple Heart. His family includes several other generals: his younger brother Brigadier General Michael Collins who served as a test pilot and astronaut, his father Major General James Lawton Collins Sr., and his uncle General Joseph Lawton "Lightning Joe" Collins.
