Aldon M. Bebb, 95, of Pittsburg, passed away at 8:45 p.m. Friday, February 20, 2015 at Via Christi Hospital.

He was born April 9, 1919 in Conesville, Iowa to Robert D. and Agnes (McKee) Bebb. He grew up on a farm in southeast Iowa. He attended rural school and graduated from Columbus Junction, Iowa High School. He attended Iowa State Teachers College, Cedar Falls, and taught three years in rural schools in his local area. He was then called into the service and served four and a half years in the Air Force during World War II, being commissioned a captain. He maintained his commission in the Reserves and was discharged a Lt. Col.

On September 7, 1946, he was united in marriage to Maxine C. Carlson at West Palm Beach, Florida. She preceded him in death on May 21, 2006. Dr. Bebb returned from military service to pursue his education and obtained the BA and Masters degrees from Northern Colorado State University in Greeley, CO in 1948.

After teaching three years in Superior State College, Wisconsin, he entered the University of Iowa in Iowa City, IA and obtained his PH.D. in 1953.

Dr. Bebb came to Pittsburg State University in 1953 and was a member of the elementary teacher education staff until his retirement in 1986. Different assignments during this time included: Director of Horace Mann Laboratory School, Director of Elementary Education, Supervisor of Student Teaching and Professor of Education. He taught many extension classes in the area. He took a leave of absence the academic year of 1968-1969, when he was chosen one of 24 candidates for a post-doctoral study at New York University. The Spring semester of 1979, he took a sabbatical leave to study at the University of Arizona, Tucson, in special methods of teaching reading. He taught several graduate classes in this area.

Dr. Bebb was a member of and active in several professional organizations, both state and national, held offices and committee assignments in many. He was also active in the Presbyterian Church, serving as an ordained elder, deacon, and member of the choir for over 50 years. He has served on the Salvation Army Board, Osage Boy Scouts of America, and YMCA membership drives, Military Officers Association of America, and was a member of the Centennial Choir and Pittsburg Rotary Club.

Survivors include a daughter, Margaret Neil and her husband, Edward of Pittsburg; a daughter-in-law Peggy Bebb of Kalispell, MT; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, a daughter, Beth Herman, a son, James R. Bebb, three older brothers and a sister, all of Conesville, Iowa. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. Private burial will be in the Highland Park Cemetery.

The family suggests memorials to The Presbyterian Church of Pittsburg. These may be left at or mailed to the Brenner Mortuary, 114 E. 4th St., Pittsburg, KS.
