Alan Blatz, died peacefully at home on Jan. 2, 2011 after a long illness. He was 78. Born in Corona, N.Y., he was the eldest son of August J. and Helen Blatz. He attended Brooklyn Prep, earned a full NROTC scholarship to Cornell University, and served in the U.S. Navy as a pilot from 1955 to 1958. After marrying his high school sweetheart, Bettie, he settled with his beloved family in Helmetta, and then moved to East Brunswick in 1960, where he raised his family and lived out his life. An accomplished chemical engineer, he retired in 1996 from PSE&G in Newark after 38 years. A gentle, devoted family man, he was a communicant at Immaculate Conception R.C. Church in Spotswood, where he was a former president of the Parish Council, the parish's first Eucharistic minister, a lector, and a devout observer at Nocturnal Adoration, as well as a member of the Knights of Columbus. He organized annual religious retreats to the Loyola House of Retreats in Morristown, which he attended regularly for 40 years. His family and Catholic religion were the heart of his life. He also loved golf, camping, the beach, jogging, playing the piano and card games, and doting on his grandchildren, lovingly attending their sporting events and activities.
