He enlisted as Cpl. Co. G. 6th Arkansas on July 26, 1861 at Pocahontas, Arkansas. He was left as a nurse after the Battle of Murfreesboro, Tennessee to attend to his brother, H. N. Bolger who was mortally wounded and captured at Murfreesboro and who died there on January 7, 1863. Cpl. Bolger was later exchanged and rejoined his regiment to learn that another brother, George W. who had been wounded at Murfreesboro had died of disease at Atlanta, Georgia on October 31, 1863. This left the only Bolger brother to survive, Pvt. Hiram P. Bolger who had been wounded at Shiloh, Tennessee and had received a medical discharge in 1862.
