Arthur Herres died as a result of drowning. He was just short of his 17th birthday.
Leaving his home at 3 o'clock Arthur and a neighbor boy went swimming in a canal near their home. Less than an hour later Arthur was dead.
His friend was swimming up the canal which was little more than waist deep when he looked back and noticed that his companion was not in sight. It was then that he discovered that Herres had drowned. Help was called immediately but nothing could be done to bring life.
Considerable water was found in the lungs and a bruise was found on the boy's forehead indicating that he had either slipped into the water and struck himself on the cement abutment or had dived and struck himself. It is more probable that he slipped.
He is survived by his younger brother, Leo and his parents. His only other sibling, a sister Dorothy, burned to death seven years earlier.
An interesting sideline to Arthur's life is that his brother Leo eventually died (in 1982) due head trauma in an accidental fall. Thus all 3 of the children in this family died tragically.
