Lawton was born in Macon to the late Alexander Lawton Miller, Sr. and Mary Smith Miller. He grew up on Nottingham Drive across from Baconsfield Park where he enjoyed the "out of doors" and various sports. He excelled in many sports, especially tennis, and was once named Macon City Tennis Champion. He attended Alexander III Elementary School where he was chosen as King of the May Festival and participated in Cub Scouts. He attended Lanier Junior and Senior High Schools for Boys. While in High School, he was a member of the ROTC, where he attained the rank of Captain, the Beta Fraternity and the Beta Honorary. He was an Honor Graduate of the Class of 1955.
In 1955/1956, as the next step in his life, he left Macon to attend Davidson College in Davidson, N.C. Following this he transferred to his father's alma mata, the University of Georgia in Athens where he earned a BBA Degree. In 1959, he entered the UGA Lumpkin Law School graduating in 1962 with an LLB Degree. During his college years he was a member of the ROTC, the Phi Kappa Phi Honorary Scholastic Fraternity and the Phi Delta Phi Legal Fraternity. Lawton was a life long Georgia Bulldogs fan.
After college, again following in his father's footsteps, he joined the United States Army in which he served his country from May 1962 until July 1965. He began his military service with Basic Armor Officer's Training in Fort Knox, Kentucky, after which he served in the 14th Armed Calvary in Bad Hersfeld, Germany. In 1964 he transferred to the JAG Corp in Heidelberg, Germany until his discharge and return to the United States in 1965. During his time in the active military, he married Kay Shaw of Macon in March 1963 and she joined him in Heidelberg in June 1963. Lawton and his wife had three children.
Upon returning to the United States, Lawton joined the U.S. Air Force Reserves in 1965 and served in the JAG Corp at Warner Robins AFB, retiring in 1987 after completing 25 years of service and attaining the rank of Lt. Coronel. Also, upon his return from Germany, Lawton immediately joined the Miller family law firm, Miller, Miller & Miller, in downtown Macon. He practiced law full time until closing his law office and beginning retirement in December 2014. As an attorney, Lawton was dedicated to deligently serving his clients to attain just results in their best interest. Lawton was a 50 year member of the Macon Bar Association and the State Bar of Georgia.
Alexander Lawton Miller, Jr., a true "Southern Gentleman", a faithful Christian, a dedicated family man, a true friend, a loyal patriot, a brilliant attorney…. He fought a good fight, he kept the faith, he has finished the course.
