Phyllis Carlson
was born to Crinus and Helen (Heersma) DeWilde on April 17, 1934 in Pipestone, Minnesota. She was baptized at First Presbyterian Church in Pipestone where she was later confirmed. She was raised and completed her education in Pipestone. In 1951, she was united in marriage to Thomas Carlson. Following their marriage, she moved to San Diego, California, to be near her husband while he served in the U.S. Navy. After he was discharged from the service, they moved to Garretson, South Dakota. Two years later, they moved to Sioux Falls, South Dakota where she lived and raised her children. She had been a resident at Southridge Health Care Center in Sioux Falls for several years. She was also a resident at the nursing home in Estelline, South Dakota and also the Good Samaritan Communities in Pipestone before returning to Southridge in Sioux Falls. On Tuesday, May 4, 2010, Phyllis died at Southridge Health Care Center at the age of 76 years and 17 days.

Phyllis loved to embroider, sew and babysit. She never learned to drive, but she enjoyed spending hours on the telephone socializing with her friends. Two of her closest friends were Rita Schumann and Dorothy Peterson. When the three of them were together, they were often referred to as the three musketeers. While she was a resident at the nursing home, she always looked forward to playing bingo there.

She is lovingly remembered by her three children, Thomas Carlson of Bruce, South Dakota, Larry Carlson of Bruce, South Dakota, and Lynn Carlson of Pipestone, Minnesota; six grandchildren, Terry, Jessica, Brendan, Grant, Kristi, and James; and four great-grandchildren, Mackenzi, Adan, Zane, and Tate; and one brother, Harris DeWilde of Pipestone, Minnesota. She was preceded in death by her parents.
