Alexander Calugan WWI registraton card states that he was born 6 Oct 1893 in Unga Village, Unga Island, Shumagin Islands, Alaska. His father was from Russia and his mother was Alaskan. At the time of his WWI registration he was living in Kodiak, Alaska, employed by the Dept of Agriculture. On the 1920 federal census he lived in Unga, employed as a codfisherman. In Unga, he married Lena Haaf and together they had two sons, Peter and Alexander Jr; two daughters, Isabel and Pauline. On the 1940 census he was a widower.

Alexander is interred in the Seward Cemetery, Kenai Peninsula, Alaska.
