Elizabeth May McElfresh Davis, 78, of Madison, died Tuesday, July 28, 2009, at Hickory Creek of Madison.

She was born May 16, 1931, in Maysville, Ky., the daughter of Robert Lee and Alice Dunaway McElfresh. She was raised in Maysville, Ky., and moved to Madison in 1973. She was a sales associate at Wal-Mart in Madison from 1997 to 2006. She also had worked as a server for the former Sirloin Stockade and at Best Western, and on the obstetrics ward at King's Daughters' Hospital in the 1970s. She enjoyed playing bingo, going to the gambling boat, traveling, playing cards and games, and her Bible study at church. She was a member of the Madison Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary Post 1969, Jefferson Post 9 Auxiliary of the American Legion and the Jefferson County Conservation Club. She attended the Church of Christ.

She is survived by three sons, Larry McClanahan of Maysville, Ky., Jacob McClanahan of Eau Claire, Wis., and John Gulley of Sanders, Ky.; six daughters, Sylvia Fryman of Aberdeen, Ohio, Dotty Lugering of Florence, Ky., Debbie Geisler, Glenda Bell and Linda Oberholtzer, all of Madison, and May Kahafer of New Albany; two step sons, John Davis of Las Vegas, Nev., and Joe Davis of Oklahoma City, Okla.; one brother, Thomas Owens of Maysville, Ky.; 19 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; two step grandchildren; 11 step great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Johnny E. Davis, whom she married Jan. 18, 1972, and who died Aug. 27, 1995; one step son, James Davis, who died in 1993; her parents; and two brothers, Alton McElfresh and Robert Lee McElfresh Jr.

The funeral was held at 11 a.m. Saturday, August 1, 2009, at Morgan & Nay Funeral Centre. Burial in Springdale Cemetery.

Friends called at the funeral home Friday, July 31, 2009, from 4 to 8 p.m. and Saturday, August 1, 2009, from 9 a.m. until the service.

She was raised in Maysville, moving to Madison in 1973. She was united in marriage to Johnny E. Davis in Montgomery County, Tennessee on Jan. 18, 1972. She was employed with Wal-Mart in Madison from 1997-2006 working as a sales associate. She also had worked as a server for the former Sirloin Stockade and Best Western. She enjoyed working in the 1970's at King's Daughters' Hospital on the OB Ward. She was a devoted mother and grandmother. She enjoyed playing bingo, going to the boat, traveling, playing cards and games. She enjoyed her Bible Study at Church. She enjoyed membership in the Madison VFW Auxiliary Post 1969, Jefferson Post 9 Auxiliary of the American Legion and the Jefferson County Conservation Club. She attended the Church of Christ. Elizabeth died Tuesday, July 28, 2009 at 10:00 pm at Hickory Creek of Madison in Madison, Indiana.

Funeral services were conducted Saturday, August 1, 2009 at 11:00am, by Bro. George A. Severn at the Morgan & Nay Funeral Centre, 325 Demaree Drive in Madison, Indiana. Interment in the Springdale Cemetery in downtown Madison, Indiana.

Friends called Friday, July 31, 2009, from 4:00 pm -8:00 pm and Saturday, August 1, 2009, from 9:00am until time of the service at the Morgan & Nay Funeral Centre, 325 Demaree Drive in Madison, Indiana.
