Joseph Wentworth Bachelder was born 26 March 1825 in Bethel, Vermont. He was married first in Livingston County, New York to Eliza Ann Wyckoff. Eliza was born circa 1825 in New York.

On 18 October 1850, Joseph and Eliza and their son Emery lived in Greenwood, Steuben County, New York. He worked as a wagon maker. He owned $300 in property. Joseph and Eliza may have divorced.

He was married second on 26 March 1860 in Boone County, Illinois to Nancy (Owen)Clark. Nancy was born on 5 June 1826 in Chatauqua County, New York, daughter of Joseph Owen and Jennet/Janet Jameson.

On 30 July 1860, J. W. and Nancy lived with their daughter Violet in Belvidere, Boone County, Illinois. A widow named C. N. Joslyn lived with them. Joseph worked as a doctor. The family owned $1,000 in real estate and $500 in personal property.

He served as a Private in Company B of the 15th Illinois Infantry on 24 May 1861 in Belvedere, Illinois. He was mustered out on 22 November 1861. He worked as a physician.

On 10 August 1870, Joseph and Nancy lived with their daughter Viola in Caledonia, Boone, County, Illinois. Two men named William Clark and Allen Allen Clark lived with them. Joseph worked as a farmer while Nancy kept house. Viola was attending school. The family owned $1,500 in real estate and $1,000 in personal property.

Joseph died on 19 May 1888 from general paralysis in the Northern Michigan Asylum. He is buried in Oakwood Cemetery.

Nancy died on 28 December 1901: Mrs. Nancy Bachelder died on Saturday evening, December 28, at six o'clock, after an illness of some duration, a gradual failing of the vital powers. The funeral services were held on Monday, December 30, Rev. Dr. D. M. Tompkins, pastor of the Methodist Episcopal church officiating. Interment took place in the Belvidere cemetery. Miss Nancy Owen was born in Chatauqua county, New York, June 5th, 1826. United in early life to Allen Clark who died many years ago, they came to Boone county in 1847 and resided on a farm, later removing to Belvidere. Six sons were born to them, of whom four are living. They are, Samuel, of Millston, Wis., Seymour of Cobden, Ill, Allen, of this city and William of Chicago. In 1858 she was married to Dr. J. W. Bachelder, who died some fourteen years ago and who served his country in the civil war. The only child by the second marriage, Mrs. Lettie Hayes, is still a resident of Belvidere and was with her mother in her last illness.

Mrs. M. E. Keeler of Belvidere and Mrs. Elvira Miller, of Marengo are sisters of the departed. The late Mrs. Perkins and Mrs. Mason were also sisters. Many grandchildren and great grandchildren survive. The passing of Mrs. Bachelder is mourned by many friends and acquaintances who learned to appreciate the true excellencies of her character. She was a consistent member of the Methodist church of this city and lived close to the faith. Many tributes have been said to her character and she will be truly mourned.

Joseph and Eliza (Wyckoff) Bachelder were the parents of two children:

i. EMORY BACHELDER was born circa 1847 in New York. He lived in Benzie County in 1870.
ii. EMMA BACHELDER was born circa 1853 in New York.

Joseph and Nancy (Owen) Bachelder were the parents of one child:

i. VIOLET BACHELDER was born on 17 October 1859 in Arington, Illinois. She was married to (–?–) Hayes.
