Finding it in 2017, after many random searches over the years, marked the beginning of this researcher's quest in earnest, as Raymond is a long lost relative.

Raymond was the firstborn child of Raymond Edward Dischert, Sr. and Rose S. Thinnes Dischert. He was born in Camden, New Jersey, and his family lived for a time in Runnemede, NJ, with his Uncle Jack Thinnes. He had three younger sisters, Libby, Ro and Jay. By 1940, the family was living in Westmont. Ray joined the Navy, like his father before him. His parents divorced in 1949, and his mother moved with her daughters to Collingswood, NJ.

Ray met Kathleen Michaud Roy, daughter of Belone and Delina Michaud, while he was in the Navy. She had a son from a prior marriage or relationship, Leonard "Butchie" Deschesnes, born October 24, 1943 in Biddeford, Maine. Kathleen and her son spoke fluent French. Ray Dischert and Kathleen Michaud Roy had three daughters together prior to their marriage in April 1949 in New Jersey: Brenda Marie Dischert, born February 1, 1946 in Eagle Lake, Maine; Judith Dischert, born in 1947, and Linda Dischert, born in April 1948. It is unclear to this researcher whether Judith and Linda were born in Maine or in New Jersey. By February, 1949, they were residing at 433 South Third Street in Camden, NJ, and Raymond was working as a plumber. On the night of February 27, 1949, Ray and Kathleen went out to a diner down the street after putting the children to bed. When they returned home shortly before midnight, they found the house filled with smoke, and Judith's crib engulfed in flames. Judith did not survive the tragedy. Leonard and Brenda were unharmed, and infant Linda was already in the hospital, under treatment for malnutrition, that evening. Raymond suffered burns to his arms while attempting to rescue his young daughter, while Kathleen brought Leonard and Brenda out of the house, and the neighbors phoned the fire department from an outside call-box. It was determined that the fire was started by young Leonard, with matches carelessly left within his reach.

Ray and Kathleen were arrested for neglect on March 7, 1949, and the surviving children were taken into protective custody by the Camden Society for the Protection of Children from Cruelty. At the urging of elder relatives, Raymond and Kathleen married in April 1949. The couple was given a suspended sentence on June 8, 1949, and the judge ordered that the children remain in protective custody until such time as they had "proven themselves worthy" of having them returned. Kathleen was expecting her fifth child at the time of sentencing. Raymond Edward Dischert, III was born October 4, 1949 in Camden.

Sadly, their marriage did not last. Kathleen, Leonard, Brenda and Raymond, III moved to Kansas City, MO after the marriage ended. It is unclear to this researcher what became of baby Linda. Raymond, Jr. later married Marge, and they had daughters Marguerite and Natalie, and a son, Raymond Matthew Dischert. Marge had two additional children from a previous marriage, Patricia and Eddie Williams.

Special thanks to sisters Libby Kircher, Ro Anderson and Jay Richardson, and niece Betty Vohringer, of Raymond Edward Dischert, Jr. for sharing their recollections of their brother and uncle, and his children; to Tom Jennings for finding newspaper articles to fill in some of the missing pieces; to familysearch.org for their accumulation of vital statistics, to Joseph R. Klett for his diligence in pursuing access to New Jersey marriage records through Reclaim the Records, and to Clara McIver for use of her photo of Pemberton Baptist Cemetery.
