Howard J. Mathena was born on December 13, 1858, at Tazewell, Virginia, and passed away May 6, at the family home on 3rd Street.

He came with his parents to western Iowa in infancy and has resided here since, with the exception of a few years.

He was married in Feb. 1888 to Miss Frances Hirst, who died December 19, 1888 leaving an infant daughter. He was again married in 1892 to Miss Mary Hirst. To this union four children were born. He united with the LDS church June 27, 1891, and of which he was still a faithful member. He is survived by a wife and 5 children, Mrs. F. W. Beaty of Hartford, Kansas, Mrs. A. A. Johnson and Arthur E. of Sioux City, and Ruth and Elsie at home, 7 grandchildren, also an aged father, 3 sisters and 3 brothers and numerous other relatives and friends.
