Army Pvt2 McKinley was assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1-101st Air Assault, Fort Campbell, Kentucky, serving as a scout and point man for the 5th Special Forces. He was on an operation fighting Sadam Hussein's loyalists in the town of Mosul. Information suggests McKinley had only seven days' worth of food rations on an operation that lasted 10 days while the temperature during the daytime was at least 130 degrees. Robert suffered heat stroke in mid-June as a result of those conditions and was transferred to a hospital in Homberg, Germany, where he went into a coma and died July 8. Robert was raised by his grandparents. "When he joined the military he grew up in a very short time," his grandfather said. "He told me, ‘If there's anything I can do for our country to make it better, I want to do it."'
