Deputy Eric Stein was shot and killed as he, the county sheriff, and another deputy attempted to question a man regarding an incident that had occurred the previous night.

Deputy Stein had served with the Keokuk County Sheriff's Office for 11 years. He is survived by his daughter, his fiancée, his father, a sister, and grandparents.

Sergeant Eric Stein, 39, of What Cheer died in the line of duty on Monday, April 4, 2011. Funeral services will begin at 1:00 P.M. Saturday, April 9, 2011 at the Sigourney High School in Sigourney, Iowa. Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 8:00 P.M. Friday, April 8, 2011 at the Sigourney High School in Sigourney, Iowa. Interment will be in the Garrett Cemetery near Delta. In lieu of flowers, the family strongly prefers memorial contributions to be made to Iowa C.O.P.S. Friends may offer condolences to the family at www.hardenfuneralhomes.com.

Eric John Stein was born in Oskaloosa, Iowa on August 25, 1971, son of Lonnie Lee Stein and Joan Malloy. He was a 1989 graduate of Tri-County High School. His work history includes Cunningham's Heating and Air Conditioning, ORMICS, and the Keokuk County Ambulance Service. Then in 2000, Eric joined the Keokuk County Sheriff's Department where he has served for the past eleven years. In 2006 he was promoted to Sergeant. Sergeant Stein was not only proud but willing to protect and serve his county any way possible. Eric's achievements include certifications as a Clan-Lab Officer, EMT/PS, firefighter, active shooter, crucial response team, as well as a critical advisor for the Keokuk County Narcotic issues. Each spring and fall he looked forward to planting and harvesting with his grandfather and his dad. Eric enjoyed sports, hunting, and rodeo activities, but what he was most proud of was being a father to his daughter.

He is survived by his daughter, his fiancé, his father, a sister, and grandparents.

Eric is preceded in death by his grandparents, Aca and Marcella Malloy and his mother, Joan Stein.
