OBITUARY :
GEORGE W. HALTERMAN, age 80 of Theodore, AL passed away Sunday April 4, 2010 at his home, surrounded by loved ones.

He was born near Hardin, MO on April 6, 1929. Mr. Halterman left home at age 14, developing an early and lifelong appreciation for the value of hard work.

He was a born leader.

He served in the U.S. Army from 1952 to 1956.

Prior to moving to the Mobile area in 1976, George resided in Odessa, MO, where he owned and operated a Sears Catalog and Appliance Store. He retired from Bendix Corp. in Kansas City, MO. In Theodore, AL, he worked for BLP Mobile Paint for 30 years, retiring as a Customer Service Manager in 1993, then continuing as a "Director of Gardens and Grass" until 2006. George was very active in the American Legion Post 250 in Fowl River, AL, where he formed many special friendships. He was also a member of VFW Post 4328 in Theodore.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 46 years, Mertha Mae (Booker) Halterman in 2005. Following Mertha's death, his closest friends became his adopted and extended family. He is survived by granddaughter Susan Azbill and husband Jon, great-granddaughter Lauren Sapp and 2 great-grandsons. George thought of Tammy Cink as a daughter and is survived by Tammy, husband Chris and their children Paul and Lauren Cink. He was considered as a father by devoted friends Lane and Connie Bonner and Agnes Lowe. He is also survived by his step-son, Don Hawkins and wife Lee of Grain Valley, MO and step-grandchildren Douglas Hawkins and Jerry Hawkins of MO and Lisa Diane Owen and Jeffery Owen of AL. Funeral Services will be held from the chapel of Serenity Funeral Home on Thursday, April 8, 2010 at 10 am.

Visitation will be Wednesday, April 7, 2010 from 5 to 8 at the funeral home and from 9 am until service time the day of the funeral.

Interment will be in Mobile Memorial Gardens.

Survivors include: three brothers, Roy Halterman, Malta Bend, Mo., Robert Halterman, Marshall, and Ronald Halterman, Richmond; two sisters, Rebecca Holman, Hardin, and Gale Green, Richmond; stepson, Don Hawkins and wife, Lee and step-granddaughter, Susan Azbill and husband, Jon, Grain Valley; step-grandsons, Douglas and Jerry Hawkins; step-great-granddaughter Lauren Sapp, Oak Grove; and two step-great-great-grandsons.

His parents and his wife of 46 years, Mertha Mae Booker Halterman, preceded him in death.

Services were held Saturday, April 10 at Serenity Funeral Home, Theodore, Ala.

Burial was in Memorial Gardens, Mobile, Ala.

Arrangements were under the direction of Serenity Funeral Home, Theodore, Ala.
