The Jefferson Herald, Jefferson, Iowa, Thursday, October 30, 1930, Page 1, Column 1 – Greene Pioneer Dies Following Short Illness – Funeral Services Held For Orsemus Beebe At Home Wednesday – Apparently in his usual good health when he retired Sunday evening Orsemus Beebe, one of Greene County's pioneers, died at his home in Jefferson Sunday at 11 p.m., following a heart attack. He had been up and around his home all day, had eaten heartily, and had spent some time down town the day before, apparently feeling well. Death came suddenly after he had been ill only a few minutes. Funeral services were conducted yesterday afternoon from the residence at 2 o'clock with interment in the Jefferson cemetery. The Rev. L. R. Gans had charge of the service at the home. The American Legion conducted the military service at the grave, where a bugle corp sounded taps and a firing squad fired a salute. Pall bearers were members of the local Legion post. Mr. Beebe was a member of the George H. Thomas post No. 23 of the G. A. R.
Lived Here Since 1865 – Mr. Beebe, who had lived in Greene county since soon after his discharge from the Union army in 1865, served as night watchman in Jefferson for ten years between 1910 and 1920. During 1904 he had charge of the Greene county poor farm. He had the distinction that few living men could claim, of breaking with a team of oxen the 80 acres near Farlin known as the O. S. Boggs farm. The farm is now owned by Cliff and Forrest West.
Mr. Beebe, who was the son of Alonzo and Elizabeth Beebe, was born in Kendell county, Ill., Sept. 27, 1845. At the time of his death he was 85 years old. He was one of eleven children, only one sister of whom survives him. She is Mrs. Jeanette Large of Los Angles, Calif.
Served in the Union Army – Mr. Beebe enlisted in the Union army in 1863 and was assigned to Company K, eighth regiment of the Illinois cavalry. He was discharged July 1865 at Benton Barracks, Mo. For several months after his discharge he carried mail for the government. Soon after that he moved to Iowa and settled at Scranton. He had resided in Greene county continuously since that time except for two years spent in Chicago where he was a member of the police force.
On Dec 24, 1870 he married Sarah C. Wright, also of Greene county. Had he lived until this December Mr. and Mrs. Beebe would have celebrated their sixtieth wedding anniversary.
After engaging in farming in various parts of the county for many years, Mr. Beebe moved his family and residence to Jefferson in 1905, where he and Mrs. Beebe had resided since then.
Two Children Survive – Four children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Beebe two daughters of whom died in early girlhood. One son, Frank Beebe of Durango, Colo., and one daughter, Mrs. J. O. Lawrence of Des Moines survive their father. Besides his son and daughter, Mr. Beebe is survived by his widow, his sister, and one grandson, Roy Beebe of Durango, Colo.
Out of town relatives here for the funeral were Mrs. Lawrence, Frank Beebe, Mr. and Mrs. Alonzo Beebe of Chicago, Ill., Mr. and Mrs. M. A. Beebe of Omaha, N. E. Wright of Glidden, and two friends, Mrs. R. M. Downing and Mrs. Talbot McRae of Ames.
