Fred N. Brooks, 91, went home to be with the Lord Wednesday, October 3. The family will receive friends Friday, October 5, from 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM at Forbis & Dick, Guilford Chapel located at 5926 W. Friendly Ave. The funeral service will be held Saturday, October 6, at 11:00 AM in the Guilford Chapel, officiated by Bart Friddle of St. Paul United Methodist Church. Military grave side service will follow at Guilford Memorial Park located on High Point Road.


A native of Winder, Ga, Fred lived in Guilford County 54 years. He was born on April 16, 1921 to Jerry Dan and Margie Spain Brooks. He was married to the late Edna Linelle Gurley Brooks and has four children and a step-daughter. Fred retired from Estes Trucking Co.

Fred enjoyed baseball, collecting coins and baseball cards, and going to yard sales and flea markets. He was committed to his family and never met a stranger. He loved his children and enjoyed spending time with them. His beautiful blue eyes and glowing smile brought joy to all he met. He was a World War II Marine veteran. He was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church and was an inspiration to all he knew.


Fred is predeceased by his wife, Linelle; his mom and dad; twelve siblings; step-daughter, Patricia Gainer Whitworth; and grandson, Chuck Whitworth.


Those left to cherish his memory are his children, Fred (Jeanne) Brooks of Wichita KS; Dixie (Tim) Culbreth of Oak Ridge; Alice (George) Wilkins of Summerfield; and Roger (Ann) Brooks of Greensboro; 12 grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.


As family and friends mourn his passing, the angels in heaven are rejoicing to have their brother home. He also was homeless in the mid 1950s because he was trying to get a job so he and is family lived with is brother who was a revered who had a log cabin church with a dirt floor
