As a young boy, Henry worked with his father in the wheelright shop behind their house on old Greensboro Road. Likewise, he helped with the farming on his father's 4000 acres. He also likely helped him work at the old brick Hillsdale store just down the road, which is now an historic landmark.
On March 27, 1862 Henry enlisted in the confederacy. He lost his left arm in the battle of Gettysburg on July 1, 1863. His life and war service is featured in an extensive article in the Greensboro News and Record on January 17, 1932.
After the war he studied to become a preacher. On December 13, 1870 he married Mollie E. Mobley and they had two sons, Orpheus Conrad and Henry Eustace. Mollie died on February 2, 1878.
Henry Clay subsequently married his first cousin Mary Rebecca Lawrence, who was also known as Mollie, on November 6, 1879. They had no additional children. H. C.'s mother, Pernertha Lawrence, was a sister to his second wife's father, Caleb A. Lawrence.
H. C. was Postmaster in Hillsdale from November 13, 1874 to March 21, 1879. In addition to farming, he was a Justice of the Peace, Deputy Sheriff, Guilford County Commissioner and tax accessor.
