Ethel was the youngest of twelve children. She was baptized at the Salem Evangelical United Brethren Church on Grove Street in Wilkes-Barre, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania.
On April 25, 1917, she married George Dobson Kline at the parsonage of the church where she was baptized. The couple had four children: Glen Thompson, Roberta Dora, Merle George, and June Ruth. George died in 1928 when their children were young, so Ethel and her children moved in with her parents.
Ethel's mother died two years later in 1930, and she took care of her father for the next ten years. One week after her father died, she married Frederick William Sorber at Wilkes-Barre on May 28, 1941.
