The son of Jacob & Maria (Sehner) Erisman, in 1860 he was a laborer presumably living in Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, but is not found in that census. He stood 5' 4" tall and light hair and brown eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Cumberland County September 15, 1862, mustered into federal service at Harrisburg September 23 as a private with Co. F, 17th Pennsylvania Cavalry (162nd Pa), and promoted to bugler, date as yet unknown. On December 7, 1863, he transferred to Co. K, 11th Veteran Reserve Corps, reassigned to the 22nd Company, 2nd Battalion, V.R.C. during a reorganization, and honorably discharged September 22, 1865.

He married Susan B. Musser June 21, 1868, in Middletown, Dauphin County, and fathered Jacob B. (b. 10/08/68), Emma K. (b. 05/??/70), Clarence (b. 10/04/72), Margaret Elizabeth (b. 05/17/75), Mary A. (b. 11/07/78 - married George Hevel), Charles B. (b. 06/23/84), James Y. (b. 09/27/86), and George (b. 06/05/89). He died at his home following a stroke. His stated age at death is given as 67-6-20, which calculates to a birth date of September 23, 1837.
