Merrill was probably born in Vermont. It is unknown who his parents were. Merrill married Orrin Babcock on 6 September 1821. They had 12 children: the oldest was a daughter and nothing is known of her except that she apparently was born and died in 1822; Jason (buried in this cemetery, married Susan Rasey, then Edna Eyena Drew, then Cynthia Eliza Lanktree), Nathaniel E [ca 1825-ca 1832], Belinda (married John Hill and moved to Iowa), Elias Babcock (buried here), James Brenton (married Mary Miller and moved to the Seattle, Wa area), Martha Ann (married Frederick Wallis who is buried here), Simeon Merrill (married Annie Younie and they are buried in Ormstown Union Cemetery), Catherine (married William Learmont and they moved to Humboldt, Iowa), Lydia R (buried here), Speedy A (buried here), and Nathaniel E (the second child with that name, and he is buried here).
Merrill and Orrin came to Canada from Hero Island, Vermont, moving in 1830 with two "waggon-loads of stuff" (per Robert Seller unused notes and his History book) and they settled in Elgin Township, Huntingdon County, Lot 10 of the Clergy Reserve, in the 4th Concession. Merrill, and perhaps the children Lydia, Speedy and Nathaniel, may have first been buried in the "Cooper Family Burying Ground" which was apparently on land between the road and the Trout River, across from their farm land. The Belden Co 1881 map of Elgin Township shows the lot owned by Jason Cooper (son of Merrill), and there is a cross printed on the section between the road and the Trout River, indicating a cemetery. Merrill, and one child at least, were reburied in Huntingdon on November 19, 1878.
