Aksel Klausen was born at 8:00 in the morning on July 18, 1922, in the north building of the historic Shawnee Mission, at 53rd Street and Mission Road. He was the youngest of three children born to Klaus and Anna Klausen.
While attending Shawnee Mission Rural High School, he met Beverly Larson, who was to be the love of his life. Their first date was Saturday night, December 6, 1941, the night before the attack on Pearl Harbor. They were married in the evening of August 29, 1942 at the Larson home.
Aksel and Beverly were the kind and loving parents of three sons, Mark, Mike, and David. Together, they taught them the family values of compassion, honesty, and hard work.
Aksel was a dairy farmer in his younger days, then left the farm and began a career in construction. He was widely known as a fine Bricklayer and Stonemason.
He was very proud to be a Freemason, and was a member of the Order of DeMolay, the Masonic Lodge, the York Rite (Knights Templar), and the Shrine Temple. Aksel was initiated into DeMolay by "Dad" Frank S. Land himself, the founder. Initially, he was a member of Old Mission Chapter in Mission Kansas, and later became the first Master Councilor of the Overland Park Chapter. He was presented with the Degree of Chevalier, and as an adult, the DeMolay Legion of Honor, the highest award given for a lifetime of service. In November, 1972, he became a member of the Abdallah Shrine Temple in Overland Park, Kansas, where he founded the DeMolay Knights unit in 1973. He later transferred his membership to Ballut Abyad Temple in Albuquerque in 2006. Aksel was very proud of the hard work performed by the Shriners Hospitals for Crippled Children.
Aksel died at 4:30 in the afternoon of August 22, 2007. He was driving on Central Avenue, historic Route 66, near his home in Albuquerque, and was involved in an auto accident.
Beverly passed away peacefully on July 20, 2003, at home, with Aksel faithfully by her side. They had been happily married for nearly sixty-one years.
