Donald Samuel "Sammy" Galbraith, 95, Rapid City, died Monday, January 11, 2016.
A visitation will be held from 5:00pm to 7:00pm on Thursday, January 14, 2016, at Serenity Springs Funeral Chapel with family present.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00am on Friday, January 15, 2016, at Serenity Springs Funeral Chapel with Major Jim Beardsly officiating.
Burial will be at Black Hills National Cemetery at 1:30pm with military honors provided by Sturgis Veterans Honor Guard.
Sammy was born on July 24, 1920, in Lake Benton, Minnesota to Samuel and Mildred (Rasmussen) Galbraith. His family moved to South Dakota when he was ten years old and he went on to graduate from Rapid City High School when Coach Cobb was the gym teacher.
He attended Business College, entered the Army during World War II and when he was discharged, he married "B.R." on February 16, 1946.
Sammy worked in civil service at Ellsworth Air Force Base and retired in 1973. He enjoyed gardening, socializing, and meeting new people. He was a storyteller; he remembered everything about people and their families. He also enjoyed camping and boating with his family. He was a handy man, so friends and relatives often came to him for his help and knowledge. He volunteered for the Salvation Army, driving the truck for thrift store, helping with donations at Christmas and Thanksgiving, and feeding people during disasters.
He was a member of the VFW in Rapid City for many years.
Sammy is survived by his 4 children; daughter-in-law; fifteen grandchildren and step-grandchildren, several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; twin sister and brother.
He is preceded in death by his wife; three sons, John, Gary, and Donny Galbraith; and one grandchild, Keith Baumgartner.
