On April 16, 1944, known as "Black Sunday", the below airmen lost their lives returning from a bombing mission in the Hollandia area due to severe thunderstorms blocking their flights back to their respective bases in the region. Planes lost included A-20's, B-24's, B-25's, F-5A's, F-7A's, P-38's, P-39's, & P-47D's. This incident was the largest operational loss suffered during World War II. All aircraft were lost due to bad weather or landing accidents.
