Phebe is acknowledged in her father William Hyland's will as one of his daughters, but she was left only a token amount. Family tradition has it that the Catholic Hyland family was very displeased that Phebe had married a Protestant. Thomas and Phebe moved to Canada sometime after the 1850 census. Their son Joseph was born there in 1852. In 1854 Thomas D. and his brother Wright contracted to purchase land in Elma, Perth County. However, Wright and Thomas D. and families remained there only briefly. About 1856 the brothers and families moved to Oxford County, Ontario where they both purchased land. Wright left after a couple years, but Phebe and Thomas remained for several more years until she died leaving him with several young children.
