He married Miss Bertha Jones at Orth, Texas.
Survived by his wife; one son - Joel Avara of Olney; one sister - Mrs. Murtle Kuykendall of Amarillo; two brothers - Norman of Amarillo and Vernon of Colorado; two grandchildren.
Residents living on Route 1 had a new mail carrier in 1965 when Sam Avara, after 19 years of serving this route, retired from the Post Office. Avara entered the post service on 1 June 1936 as a city letter carrier. He served in that capacity until 16 March 1946 when he was transferred to a rural route 1. It is estimated that Avara drove 312,894 miles on his route during 19 years of service. He did not have one single driving accident.
Sam Avara took over for Clyde Poole when he retired.
