Henry Marting, died on Saturday morning peacefully in his sleep at the residence of his son-in-law Mr. Louis Volker, from a cold. He was one of the oldest and well-known German citizens of the city; 80 years 1 month and 5 days old...He was born March 26, 1817 in Hannover and emigrated in 1847, he spent a year in Pittsburg, then Jackson Co., OH for 11 years, fought a farm near Bennett's Mill...In 1873 he joined with Mr. F. C. Herms and opened up the dry goods store under the name Marting and Herms...He was married in 1840 to Marie Knauper who died in 1877. Of their nine children 6 survive:.
