Civil War Union Army Brigadier General. In 1861, he was commissioned a Captain in the 2nd Iowa Cavalry and after the campaign to Corinth, Mississippi, he was appointed Colonel. He led a brigade at the Battle of Corinth, then in Grierson's Raid and was severely wounded at the Battle of Moscow, Tennessee on 4 December 1863. While recovering, he commanded the cavalry depot in St. Louis, Missouri and was promoted Brigadier General in April 1864. He served in Tennessee and led troops in the Franklin and Nashville Campaigns, ending his combat service. For recognition of his wartime service, he was brevetted Major General of US Volunteers in March 1865. After the war, he remained in the Regular Army as Colonel in command of the 9th US Cavalry, Department of the Southwest.
