United States Army Brevet Brigadier General. He served as an officer in the United States Army during the War of 1812, and in the 1820s led the first military expeditions into the American Midwest. He established what became Fort Leavenworth in the Kansas Territory. Brevetted Brigadier General in 1825, he died of sickness in 1834.
