He was recommended to receive the Medal of Honor, but never received it.
On July 30, 1864, in Petersburg, he deliberately stood up and fired his weapon until the enemy was close upon him. Instead of surrendering he ran the gauntlet of shot & shell and escaped. Civil War records claim he had black eyes, black hair and stood 5 ft 8 in tall.
Died from inflammation of the lungs and his death certificate indicates that he died in Custer.
This cemetery has very few stones and has not been taken care of for years. It is in complete disrepair.
