Dr William Foushee "Sr"
Born Oct 26, 1749 in Northumberland County, VA and died August 21, 1824 Richmond, VA.

NOTE: I added the "Sr" after his name to separate him from his son who has been listed in documents as William Jr and also became a doctor. Therefore, "Sr" is added for clarity.

Son of Capt John and his 2nd wife Winifred (Williams or Yeates) Foushee "Sr".

Husband of Elizabeth Isabella (Harmanson/Harmonson) Foushee. They married Mar 6, 1775 and in the early years of their marriage, they lived in Northampton County, VA. Later moving to Richmond about 1780.

William and Elizabeth had 7 children. They are:
1) Dr. John Harmanson Foushee; died November 1812
2) Nancy Foushee; died March 1796; never married.
3) Margaret T. Foushee; married William Chilton Parker.
4) Elizabeth Foushee; married Richard Elliott Parker.
5) Charlotte Foushee; married Dr. William Carter.
6) Isabella Foushee; married Thomas Ritchie.
7) Dr. William Foushee Jr; b) Feb 10, 1784 in VA; d) Feb 7, 1835 in Richmond, VA; married Lucy Lawrence on March 3, 1805.

William studied medicine for several years at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland. He apprenticed with two Norfolk physicians, Dr John Ramsay and Dr James Taylor and in 1774 joined their practice.

Dr. William Foushee Sr was a distinguished surgeon in the American Revolution. At the end of the War, he served as Surgeon General, and director of the military hospital in Richmond, VA. He also received a land grant for his service.

After the war, he was one of the most prominent citizens in Richmond, where a street is named after him downtown between Canal and Broad Streets.

Dr. Foushee was Richmond's first Mayor. Elected to the mayoralty in 1782.

He was a member of the House of Delegates in 1791, 1798-1799, and again in 1806-1808. A member of the Governor's Council of State 1799-1806 and then between 1808-1824, Dr Foushee served as Richmond's postmaster. He was appointed to this position by Thomas Jefferson.

He was a leader in civic, commercial, political, and social affairs for approximately half a century. He lived on Main Street, near the present Post Office Building and later moved to First and Grace Streets where his back yard stretched to what is known today as Foushee St.

Despite a busy professional career, Dr. Foushee found time to serve as a trustee of the Richmond Academy, a board member of the old Bank of Richmond from its establishment in 1793, and as president of the James River Navigation Company. He held that position for 33 years, succeeding George Washington in 1785 after Washington had organized the company.

Dr. Foushee also headed various civic and patriotic societies, including such groups as the Society of the Friends of the Revolution in 1813, and being involved in the Richmond Quoits Club.

As a political leader and a man of wit and social presence, it was also his function to preside over large political dinners whenever Thomas Jefferson, James Monroe or other prominent leaders of the Republican (Democratic) party came to Richmond.

He is buried in the Thomas Ritchie and William Carter plot in Shockoe Hill Cemetery in Richmond, VA.
