Leon J. Canova (1866-1947), former resident of Palatka, died Sunday afternoon at the East Coast Hospital in St. Augustine, of a heart attack.
Mr. Canova was born in St. Augustine on Februry 22, 1866. He came to Palata as a young man and was associated in business with his brother, the late Louis C. Canova. In 1893 he was married to Virgina Ransom of this city, who predeceased him in 1943.
Mr. Canova was for a number of years connected with the Department of State, Washington, D.C., and spent many years in Cuba, Mexico, South America and Puerto Rico on both official and private business. For the past eight years he had made his home at Flagler Beach, and was a frequent visitor to relatives and friends here.
Mr. Canova, through his long connection with the government service and his experiences in traveling and residing in the Latin American countries, was one of Florida’s best informed men, and was an interesting and fluent speaker and writer. Up until his final illness he busily managaged in historical writings for book publication and articles for National magazines. His last official service was in Florida history research work, especially dealing with old Spanish records.
He is survived by a daughter, Miss Lillian Canova of this city; a son, E. C. Canova, Washington, D.C.; a granddaughter, Miss Shirley Canova, Palatka; two grandsons, Leon J. Canova, 2nd, Washington, D.C.; and E. C. Canova, Jr., Pleasantville, Ohio.
Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at St. Monica’s Catholic Church. Interment was in Oak Hill East Cemetery. (Palatka Times-Herald Obituary dtd Friday, 17 Oct 1947.)
