Born in Valletta, Malta, Padre Paolo Attard SJ., studied at the seminary of Gozo before joining the Society of Jesus at the early age of 15. Moving to Sicily for his Novitiate, he studied philosophy there in Acireale and later theology in Naples and Posillipo.

Assigned to the Jesuit schools of Palermo as a teacher, where he was loved and respected, in 1936 Attard returned to Malta where he spent many years as spiritual director at the Archdiocesan Seminary. He also served as spiritual director of the Congregation of the Onorati.

Padre Attard was above all a renowned preacher in Malta, Sicily and various Italian cities. A number of panegyrics of his in Italian were published between 1937 and 1948. These panegyrics include the memorable "Panegerico di S. Paolo Naufrago" recited at the Collegiate Parish Church of St. Paul's Shipwreck in Valletta on February 10, 1937; "Le Tre Ore di Agonia: Le Sette Parole di Nostro Signore Gesù Cristo in Croce"; and "L'Immacolata Concezione: la più bella visione del cielo, della terra, dei secoli", recited at the Collegiate Parish Church of the Immaculate Conception in Cospicua.

Attard held a special passion for philately. Each year he went to Rome for the baths. It was there that he passed away on October 8, 1951 aged 62 and eventually interred in the chapel of the Society of Jesus at the Campo Verano Cemetery.
