Buried as Unknown. Six men were originally buried 6 miles SE of Calhoun, Ga., in Mr Clark's garden. He was originally buried near Frank Miller, D Billings, and Myron Anderson, all 88th Illinois Infantry, and Frederick Smith, 44th Illinois Infantry. He was not identified and was buried as an Unknown in one of the following graves: D(K)-3, D(K)-9, D(K)-10, or D(K)-12, under the old numbering system, in Marietta National Cemetery.
The burial register does not contain graves D-1 to D-65 or their cross-reference to the new numbering system. Therefore, I have not been able to locate their graves in Marietta National Cemetery. But there is evidence that they were re-numbered as K, and then as M.
No. 39. Report of Lieut. Col. George W. Smith, Eighty-eighth Illinois Infantry. HDQRS. EIGHTY-EIGHTH ILLINOIS INFANTR YOLS., Atlanta, September 10, 1864.
